A broad-based group of Thoroughbred industry stakeholders announced Feb. 9 the establishment of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA)—an organization designed to serve as both the accrediting body for aftercare facilities that care for Thoroughbreds following the conclusion of their racing careers and a fundraising body to support these approved facilities.

Funded initially by seed money from Breeders’ Cup, The Jockey Club, and Keeneland Association, the TAA is comprised of owners, trainers, breeders, racetracks, jockeys, aftercare professionals, and other industry groups.

A note from Jon Marvel of Western Watersheds: WWP Joins to Litigate the Pancake Complex Wild Horse Gather on the Ely District of the BLM in Nevada.

The case is being litigated by attorneys from the environmental law firm Meyer, Glitzenstein & Crystal of Washington D.C. Bill Eubanks and Kathy Meyer are the lead attorneys.  WWP has joined this litigation because it is an opportunity to challenge the BLM failure to assess livestock grazing in comparison with wild horse impacts on public lands. The BLM ignored livestock impacts in making a decision to zero out wild horses in the Jake’s Wash area of about 160,000 acres within the larger Pancake Complex. The litigation will challenge both the site-specific horse gather decision and the underlying 2008 Ely RMP/EIS that WWP is also litigating as part of our 16 RMP litigation currently in front of Judge Winmill in Boise.  The two lawsuits will assist in bringing legal pressure on the BLM in multiple ways.

Amy Lueders said that's the best way to stop horse protection advocates from undermining the agency's roundup policies with video footage of the mistreatment of the animals and making it harder for federal land managers to win the public's trust.
"Regardless of title, whether you are a contractor or law enforcement or public affairs, that's everyone's responsibility," she said in an interview with The Associated Press.

I adopted him June 1998, at the young age of 20 months. I have owned a horse since 1978, and he has taught me more just in my watching his instinctive nature a wild horses!!

Another Irrational Wild Horse Roundup

The Blm is planning a round up of 2,000+ wild horses at Antelope Complex in Nevada. Madeleine Pickens has purchased a ranch adjacent to this complex, but needs permission to transition wild horses onto her property. This example of irrational behavior by this agency to not make a justified decision to not gather but transfer to her eco-sanctuary.

Madeleine Pickens has submitted a proposal to Bob Abbey to postpone this gather that directly affects the wild horses on the future site of the eco-sanctuary that she is developing in Nevada and allow her to construct a holding facility on the private land, that she has already purchased for the wild horses; which are adjacent to the Antelope Complex. This would also be a considerable savings to American taxpayers and the government in many ways.

Unfortunately, the request was denied, and they will proceed with the gather, in late January 2011, unless we the public voice our opinions against this. Luckily, so many animal welfare groups have also spoken out on this issue and signed onto a letter, written and submitted to Bob Abbey, by the Wild Horse Preservation Campaign. Please read the letter and take action now by clicking the button below. This issue is time sensitive, so please take action today. Also, please ask all your friends to join in. Together, we can change the future of these mustangs.

omorrow, (January 1st) our Saving America's Mustangs' 2011 Rose Parade float will be showcased to over 54 million viewers worldwide!!! This is such great exposure for the Wild Ones!! Please make a point to tune into the Rose Parade on January 1st and give our mustangs the attention they deserve!! This is also a great opportunity to see real, GREAT AMERICAN MUSTANGS live!!! Six of our very own mustangs will be walking proudly in the 5.5 mile parade, celebrating the Rose Bowl and our American heritage! One million parade goers will be lining the streets to get a glimpse at these beautiful, floral floats. We would love to have you cheer us on and wave to you as we pass by.

Also accompanying our float and equestrian unit we will be honoring many great Americans including: wounded veterans, including several from Patriot Paws, as well as our 4 legged heroes from the Military War Dogs Association, and several Native American tribes. Not to mention, some of our respected Saving America's Mustangs Advisory Board Members and a HUGE fireworks display!!

A federal court judge sided with wild horse advocates earlier this month when he declined to dismiss their lawsuit opposing a U.S. Forest Service (USFS) plan to construct a fence at the Custer National Forest, which spans from South Dakota to Montana. The fence would border the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, located near Lovell, Wyo.

The suit, filed in July by The Cloud Foundation, Front Range Equine Rescue, and photographer and author Carol Walker, alleges that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) new Herd Area Management Plan and the USFS Plan to construct the two-mile-long fence violates the Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 because it denies mustangs access to traditional grazing areas.

The agencies had sought a dismissal of the case, which represents an amended version of a September 2009 complaint seeking a court-ordered halt to a BLM gather of 190 mustangs from the Pryor range. The advocates amended their complaint after U.S. District Court Judge Edmund G. Sullivan denied the restraining order and allowed the gather to take place.

On Dec. 15, District of Columbia District Court Judge James S. Gwin declined to dismiss the suit and granted the advocates 30 days to file a second amended complaint in connection with the case.

Cloud Foundation Executive Director Ginger Kathrens who produced a series of documentary films about the Pryor Herd, said she was pleased that the case will continue.

"We hope that both the BLM and USFS are made to answer for the 40-plus years of mismanagement of this precious and celebrated wild horse herd," Kathrens said.

BLM Spokesman Tom Gorey declined comment on the ongoing litigation.

Office of the Attorney Generals final report on the BLM

In early May or thereafter the Office of Inspector General's (OIG) office in Lakewood Colorado was requested to investigate the BLM on its merits for the management policies of the Wild Horse And Burro Program. The investigation was overseen by Laura Lee Bennett and it asked advocates of wild horses and burros to submit letters to discuss issues, policies, and in the field events from numerous round ups involving death, harrasment of field observers that have become controversial. The report can be read in the document, "Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro Program" on their website dated December 13, 2010.
